BAEO Statement on the Ending of DACA
BAEO President Jacqueline Cooper released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. The decision impacts nearly 800,000 individuals whose parents brought them into the U.S. illegally:
“As an organization dedicated to increasing access to high-quality educational options for Black children, we are appalled by the brazen dismantling of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy.
“These emerging leaders, some of whom are as young as 15-years-old, were asked to register with the government in exchange for an opportunity to work, attend school and live without fear of deportation. The decision to bring an end to DACA betrays their trust and is a demoralizing blow to a community pursuing the American dream.
“While most media accounts portray DACA recipients as Latino, Dreamers are from all over the world, including the African diaspora.
“DACA recipients deserve a path to citizenship. BAEO stands with the Dreamers and we call on our partners and allies to urge Congress and the Administration to protect these young people.”
