BAEO President Issues Statement on Renewal of D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program

BAEO President Jacqueline Cooper released the following statement on the bipartisan congressional budget deal that reauthorizes the federal D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program. The budget deal will fully fund the scholarship program through 2019.

"The reauthorization of the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program is a victory for the many low-income and working-class Black families in Washington, DC who count on the scholarship program to send their child to a great school. The scholarship program has helped thousands of children get on a path to educational excellence who would otherwise continue to struggle in underperforming and under resourced schools. Full funding for the program through 2019 will ensure even more children will have access to this scholarship.

"We believe parents are best equipped at making education decisions for their children. The scholarship program offers another high-quality educational option for them to weigh. Since it's inception in 2004, the scholarship program has successfully awarded more than 6,400 scholarships to deserving families.

"This bipartisan agreement by the House and Senate will ensure even more parents and their children will benefit from the scholarship program in the future."
