BENJAMIN CHAVIS JOINS NATIONAL PARENTAL CHOICE ORGANIZATION Washington, D.C. – The Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO) announced today that Benjamin Chavis has been named the new Senior Advisor for Strategic Alliances. He will be responsible for establishing and fostering new relationships and allies for the organization.
Chavis is the Co-Founder, President and CEO of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network (HSAN), the world’s largest coalition of hip-hop artists and recording industry executives and former Executive Director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
“BAEO is excited Dr. Chavis is joining our organization and our fight for high-quality educational options for Black children and low-income families in this nation,” said Kenneth Campbell, President of BAEO. “We are committed to protecting current parental choice programs and expanding our outreach in cities with poor academic performance by Black children.”
Chavis is also currently the President of Education Online Services Corporation (EOServe Corp), the world’s leading provider of online higher education for Historically Black Colleges and Universities across America.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of North Carolina; a Master of Divinity, magna cum laude, from Duke University; and a Doctor of Ministry from Howard University.
“I have known Ben for many years and he is deeply committed to the educational achievement of Black children,” said Kevin P. Chavous, BAEO Board Chair. He began his career in 1963, as a statewide youth coordinator in North Carolina for the Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1970, Chavis was appointed Southern Regional Program Director of the 1.7 million member United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice (UCC-CRJ) and in1985 was named the Executive Director and CEO of the UCC-CRJ. In 1988, he was elected Vice President of the National Council of Churches of the USA. From 1985 to 1993, Chavis wrote and produced the national syndicated newspaper column and radio program, “Civil Rights Journal.” In 1993 and 1994 he served as the Executive Director and CEO of the NAACP. Chavis was the National Director and organizer of the Million Man March in 1995. From 1995 to 1997, Chavis was the Executive Director and CEO of the National African American Leadership Summit (NAALS). In 2001, he and Russell Simmons co-founded HSAN. In 2009, Chavis joined with Ezell Brown to establish the Education Online Services Corporation.
BAEO is a national, non-profit, membership organization. BAEO was founded in 2000 by Howard Fuller, Deborah McGriff, Virginia Walden-Ford, Philadelphia State Rep. Dwight Evans, Kenneth Campbell, and several other prominent Black educators, elected officials and civil rights activists with start-up funding from the Walton family foundation. BAEO celebrated its 10th anniversary at Symposium 2010, the Annual Meeting of the organization in Milwaukee, Wis., on March 4-6.
